Rock Sound has put up their first review of "Nightmare", reviewing every song on it's own. Read a preview below. For the full review, go here! The article also includes a picture of a new photo shoot.
‘SO FAR AWAY’ Another slow-building, ballad-esque opening: “How do I live without the ones I love? Facing time always on my mind. I have so much to say, but you’re so far away.” Finally there’s something a little bit genuine in this. This track is the most heartfelt so far, but just as you think the song should end, out comes the acoustic guitar and a repeated build up launching straight into a ‘November Rain’-type guitar solo. Wow, Axl would be crying his eyes out right now.
‘GOD HATES US’ Quiet guitars lead into a colossal crashing of drums and a tune that is anthemic. Inspiring some serious fist pumping, this will be great for live shows. There’s a lot of hate here, mostly directed at God. There’s also possibly the worst beatdown known to man, but a widdly guitar solo redeems it, kind of.
The Examiner has put up an interview with Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy. Among questions about touring with Iron Maiden, they also questioned him about recording the upcoming Avenged Sevenfold album and getting a death bat tattoo.
Q: When you got the call from M. Shadows and Avenged Sevenfold asking you to record and eventually tour, what was that initial conversation like for you, then leading into the recording process? A: Well, my contact with them began before Jimmy passed away. I had been in touch with Jimmy. He had been sending me e-mails because he'd been a big fan of mine. Then I became friends with M. Shadows. As soon as Jimmy passed, I called M. Shadows and expressed my thoughts and told him I'd do anything I could. I was supportive of what I could do on a personal level. After the funeral, I got a call from their manager, then M. Shadows, and they asked me if I would finish the album. I was completely honored, and luckily, my schedule was open. We met in L.A. and went to dinner and hung out, and those guys were deep in the grieving process. It was a very heavy, heavy process. It's a big family. But I went in and did the album, and we had an amazing time musically and personally, and they welcomed me into the family.
Q: How challenging is it to balance an attempt to do Jimmy justice on the album while still putting your own stamp on the project? A: I didn't even want to put my own stamp on the project. That was not my objective. I was called in to bring Jimmy's parts to life, not bring Mike Portnoy into Avenged Sevenfold. That being said, that's what my job entailed. I spent a tremendous amount of time taking direction from the band. I'm not used to being produced. Normally, when I go into sessions, I go in and do my own thing, but in this case, I took direction. Every once in awhile, though, they would say, "Hey, do your own thing."
Q: And you didn't take long to get a tattoo of the Avenged logo, right? A: After spending 10 days in the studio -- you know, they have a family spirit. It's their crew members, girlfriends and wives, and toward the end of the session, I knew I had to get a death bat to commemorate being a part of the family. It was not just a recording session. It was an emotional experience for me.
Q: Where did you put it? A: It's on the inside of my left arm. Me and (rhythm guitarist) Zacky (Vengeance) got matching ones. His is on his right arm.
Avenged Sevenfold has been scheduled to play Pointfest 27 on August 14th as one of the headliners of the festival. The festival will take place at the Verizon Wireless Theater in Missouri and ticket will go on sale June 26th.
Tattoo artist Grant Cobbtweeted the following and included a photo of Johnny Christ's latest ink:
I did this all today on Johnny, pretty sure it's the biggest deathbat tattoo. #foREVer http://twitpic.com/1y042e
Grant Cobb has done a lot of art on our guys before. He recently finished up Johnny's sleeves, Matt's hand, he gave Zacky and Mike Portnoy the shared death bats, he gave Syn the MARLBORO on his fingers and so on! Check out more of Grant Cobb's art on Facebook.

Just a preview:
stu: So you’re back in the studio after the tragedy went down - that first five to ten minutes when you first get an instrument back in your hand, when you first get a microphone back in your hand, is there anything you can share with the fans out there about the first five to ten minutes after things went down and again share with people you guys getting back into to the music after the stuff went down?
synyster gates: Well it’s hard to sum it up in the first five minutes, but I know it was actually for me personally really therapeutic getting back into the studio with this guy. We listened, pretty much the record was done, ya know. We were trying to finish everything up, polish everything. The first thing we did, I remember he had all the files at his house – we listened to the song that jimmy wrote right before he died. He said I’m done writing, the record is done. Had these scratch vocals and stuff that were pretty much prophesying his passing, it was pretty ridiculous. We listened to that, it was beautiful but it was horrifying. it was a couple of weeks after he passed, three weeks or whatever. After the first week, you just don’t know if you can even be a band, you’re not even focusing on it. By the end of the second week, we’re talking about it. Middle of the third week, we were like all right let’s do it. We gotta leave his legacy and if it were one of us we would absolutely want the others to carry on, but yeah. For the first five minutes when we were back into it that’s what we did, we listened to that song and it was pretty mindblowing for me.
