I don’t know how to start this or know where to begin. First I would like to thank all the fans for their support through the passing of Jimmy. It has been comforting to see his fans, our fans, and everyone in general give their support. Jimmy was my best friend, as he was best friends with many other people including the members of Avenged Sevenfold. He was hands down the greatest person I have ever known. I told him I loved him everyday. He demanded your love and was never afraid to give it back. I have walked side by side with Jimmy, everyday, for the last 18 years of my life. I have no memories before Jimmy, and it’s going to be damn hard to move forward without him here. It still doesn’t seem real. He was my best friend, songwriting partner, band mate, confidant, and most importantly, he was my brother. The crazy thing about Jimmy was that everyday was a crazy story. We have told our favorite Jimmy stories for the last 2 weeks and never have we repeated ourselves. This guy was magical. The out pour of art from his soul was unlike the world has ever seen. Unless you spent a day with Jimmy, or 18 years, it’s impossible to explain, so I’m not going to try. He inspired people in different ways. He wasn’t just a drummer, he honestly didn’t care so much for the technical side of drums, cause he could play anything he wanted. He was all about creating beautiful songs, original fills and hopefully touching people with his art and mind. He told all of us for years, including his parents, that he knew two things in life. He wanted to be a rockstar, and that he wasn’t going to live past 30 years old. He was right on both accounts, but I know Jimmy, and if he knew how much pain this would cause for the ones he left behind, he would have done anything he could to stick around a little longer. Jimmy gave so much and in the end it was his time to go. All my reasons for wanting him to stay are selfish and I know he is in a better place then this, so in a way I’m joyful that my best friend is now at peace. He made it to the other side first and I can’t wait to hang with him again. I have so much to say but can’t find the words so I will wait until time can allow me to find a way to express myself. As for the rest of us, it has become clear what we need to do. We had just finished writing a record with Jimmy. I can’t promise what the future holds because right now it’s too painful to think about, but we know we need to record and put out this record in honor of Jimmy, for Jimmy. He would call me every night to talk about songs and tell me “this shit is gonna change the world.” I agreed with him, unfortunately I didn’t know it would be on these terms. Please be patient with us for we cannot imagine how hard this is gonna be to get through, we just know we have to do it for his legacy. After that, who knows? But I know Jimmy will help us make that decision when the time comes. I love you Jimmy and I feel like the luckiest man in the world to have known you and spent 18 years of my life with you. Rest in Peace my friend.

Along with this letter, Matt posted the following picture and video:
Chris Epting of the Huntington Beach Indepent wrote a blog post about Jimmy's death and services. Unlike many other blogs, Chris writes this blog as a friend. Please take a moment to read this blog.
In The Pipeline: How do you write about such a man? By Chris Epting
I’m sitting here trying to make sense and write this column about what I witnessed last week the two services I attended for Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, drummer (who wrote and sang) for the Huntington Beach-based band Avenged Sevenfold.
If you saw the column I wrote a few months back about Joe and Barbara Sullivan, Jimmy’s parents, you’ll remember that this tight-knit family knew early that the little boy banging on toys in the tub was destined for something percussive but as the member of a spectacularly popular band?
“The Rev” tragically passed away at 28 the week before last, and while nobody is quite sure what happened, it really doesn’t matter what’s important is that a family here misses their son (and brother).
Joe and Barbara Sullivan want to address the fans soon, and they will. For now, not as a columnist but as a friend, I asked their permission to convey the power of what I witnessed at the services, and they said it was OK. But as I sit here, it’s hard to know where to begin.
This lovely family (including Jimmy’s sisters Kelly and Katie) was visible at the services not just gracefully tending to the assembled flock, but on the several scrapbook photo boards at the church featuring hundreds of family photos. Vacations, camping trips, birthdays, ball games, Jimmy playing one of his first sets of drums they all grew up right before our eyes.
So how do you begin to write of the vastness of this loss the family is feeling? I can tell you that as friends and family paid tribute to The Rev at the rosary service the night before the funeral, it was powerful, heartfelt and real just like The Rev himself. The packed church was treated to stories from pals, relatives and his first drum teacher, who spoke of the young boy who understood and executed polyrhythmic theory in a matter of weeks.
Grade-school buddies recalled the happy-go-lucky athlete who became a real-life rock star but never forget where he came from. The four remaining members of Avenged Sevenfold entered together and then rose together to address the crowd. Tearfully, these young men, wives and girlfriends by their side, shared their love of their bandmate.
Finally, The Rev’s dad, Joe Sullivan, spoke about his son, honoring him with an eloquent speech on how much he learned from his boy and how it will affect his life going forward. There was pain in the room, but it was trumped by joy and love generated by The Rev, whom many felt comfortable, justifiably, in calling their best friend.
The funeral the next day was an equally dramatic, beautiful event. In addition to the hundreds of family and friends gathered (including Jimmy’s fiancιe, Leana), there were several bands in attendance, including members of Buckcherry and My Chemical Romance. Flowers, cymbals and drum heads signed by legendary bands were delivered representing the love and respect among the band’s brethren.
Avenged Sevenfold guitarist Brian Haner, a.k.a. Synyster Gates, delivered a soaring eulogy with focus and class. You look at him and the other young men in the band, M. Shadows, Zacky Vengeance and Johnny Christ, and wonder what they must be feeling but in their eyes, you see the pain of their loss.
I will tell you here that besides their music, what I love about Avenged Sevenfold is that they choose to remain part of Huntington Beach. They could easily have left after hitting it big, but they didn’t. They bought homes here, they’re known around town, they hire their buddies as crew; they’re good guys. Rock stars? Whatever. They’re hard-working, successful young men who got where they are because they’re very good at what they do, and the city is better for having them here.
Back to the Sullivan family. As they clung together at the church and at the cemetery, surrounded by hundreds of mourners, it reminded one that the son they gave the world affected many lives young lives. As I struggled trying to write this column, an e-mail arrived.
It was from a young woman in Omaha, Neb., Rachel Lee. She’s a 22-year-old librarian who loves Avenged Sevenfold.
Her note read in part, “I specifically wanted to thank you for humanizing the drummer and his family, giving a sense of what those of us who have looked up at their stage and sung their lyrics, begged for their autographs, have only sensed at a distance that at the end of the night their loved ones back in Huntington Beach are truly their family and their home. While the fandom has suffered a great loss, we dearly wish to express that they are not alone in their grief and there are a lot of us out there who wish we could do something to ease the pain of Jimmy’s passing. Tonight, a candlelight vigil is being planned in a number of cities in his memory, fans gathering together to talk and laugh and remember The Rev.”
She went on to tell me about a scrapbook project in honor of Jimmy being headed by a young woman in Florida, Victoria Deroy, who also wrote to express her sorrow over Jimmy’s loss, and her plan to help keep his memory alive.
“Avenged Sevenfold saved my life, and from the moment I heard of Jimmy’s death, I felt as though my entire world had fallen apart,” she wrote. “I wanted to comfort the men that I had grown to know and love through their music, DVDs and live performances. I sent out over 20 messages to fan pages and tried to get several of my friends involved and the end result was over 190 messages from fans all over the world. We received prayers, notes and stories, even from people who had known Jimmy personally. I am currently in the process of hand-crafting the scrapbook and will send it out as soon as I am finished.”
Losses like this will never be easy for me to process, make sense of and write about, but the words of these fans brought some clarity. Jimmy’s loss is being felt by millions all around the world especially by a family and a band of brothers here in Huntington Beach.
If you haven’t listened to Avenged Sevenfold, I recommend you do. It’s raw, passionate music played with skill, soul and unbridled fury. My 16-year-old son, Charlie, adores this band, so we have had the benefit of hearing them constantly as I write this, their song “Critical Acclaim” plays loudly, and proudly, behind me.
Listen to the music, listen to the magic, and by all means, listen to the backbeat thunder. There’s no way better way to honor the Sullivan family after all, that’s their boy on the drums.
As mentioned before, this weeks Kerrang! magazine features an article about the sudden passing of Avenged Sevenfold's The Rev. Below is the scan for those that cannot get their hands on the magazine.
The band Cobra Cocktail wrote a song called 'The Plague' after hearing of Jimmy's sudden passing. The song is dedicated to 'The Rev'. Listen to it on their MySpace and don't forget to read their blog which includes a little about them writing this song, plus lyrics!

Fans of the Huntington Beach hard-rock band Avenged Sevenfold turned out Friday evening for a candlelight vigil in memory of the band's drummer, Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan.
Sullivan, 28, was found dead in his Huntington Beach home on Dec. 29. The Orange County Coroner's Office has yet to rule on a cause of death pending the results of toxicology and other tests.
William Roe of Bakersville, from left, Sheila Ramm of Lake Elsinore and Jacky Krausse of Riverside remember Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan at Friday night's vigil at Huntington Beach Central Park. "I would not be person I am." said Jacky Krausse about Sullivan's influence on her.
If you attended the vigil and would like to share your stories with others and/or your pictures, send me an email at a7xfansdotcom@gmail.com and I will add it to the site.
Modern Drummer is holding it's annual Readers Poll. Besides being able to vote for your favorite drummer and percussionist, you can also vote for the 2010 Modern Drummer Hall of Fame spot. Honestly, we can only think of one person that would be right for this spot and I know you all agree. So please head over and vote for our very own Jimmy Sullivan. Let's make him proud once more!
Voting ends February 15th, 2010 and the results will be announced in the July issue of Modern Drummer.
Many of you have asked me to post this over the past few days. However, I chose not to, as it seemed disrespectful to me to 'just' move on like that, while it had not been a week. This is still a very difficult time for family and friends, even for some fans still. - Thanks to everyone for messaging me about this though!
Yesterday, James "Jimmy" Owen Sullivan, better known as "The Rev", was put to rest at his final resting place. Many loved ones said their final goodbyes. Here's what Brian Haner Sr had to say about the funeral:
Please do not message me and ask me for any further details regarding Jimmy's funeral or his final resting place. Please respect the privacy of his family and friends. Please respect Jimmy - let him rest in peace.
We would like to thank all of Jimmy’s fans for the heartfelt comments that have been posted it is comforting to know that his genius and antics were appreciated and that he was loved so much. Our hearts are broken he was much too young to fall.

Barbara & Joe, Kelly & Katie & the extended Sullivan family
2009 has been a great year for Avenged Sevenfold. The band did a lot of touring all over the place and got to play with musical influences like Slash and Metallica (again) and got to play in front of many of you. After touring for months, the guys wrapped it up and headed back home to take their hard needed rest and spend time with their loved ones.
In the past few months, we were slowly getting updates on the new material they were working on. In between, Matt finally got to marry his Valary and, without a doubt, had the best day of his life. Zacky got a lot of work done with his clothing company Vengeance University. 2009 couldn't have gotten any better.
Unfortunately, December 28th turned into a black day for Avenged Sevenfold. Losing their friend, their brother, James 'Jimmy' Owen Sullivan was something no one could have ever predicted. Jimmy's death was a shock to all of us. It has been a few days, yet it seems so surreal that he is no longer with us.
Right now is a time for mourning. His family, his friends and us fans. I understand that many of you might not be in the mood to celebrate New Years Eve today - neither am I. But whether you celebrate or not, I ask you all to look back at 2009 and be grateful for all the good things in life, the good things that happened to you this past year. For one moment, don't mourn Jimmy's death, but celebrate his life, the years he was here on earth, with all of us. He left us all with great music and great memories. Think about those, look up at the sky and smile.
Avenged Sevenfold fans, friends, please stay strong during this difficult time and remember that all of us fans are here to support each other right now. May 2010 be a better year for all of us. I wish you love, luck, health and happiness.
A lot is happening at the moment and it's hard to keep up with it all. I will make a list below, containing any news about Jimmy's passing and so on. Also, lots of posts have been made by celebrities and/or friends regarding his passing, so I will put those up as well.
A big thank you to everybody sending information, links and so on. You're a big help. <3

Candle Light Vigil in honor of Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan When: Friday, January 8th, 2010.
There will be a candle light vigil held in honor of Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, who sadly passed away on Monday, December 28, 2009. This vigil will give those pained by his passing a chance to say their goodbyes, and a chance to mourn with others.
It will be held in Central Park, Huntington Beach, from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm, at the “Rotary Bandshell”. This is a concrete platform with an archway and eight flags. It is located behind the Huntington Beach Public Library. Park in the parking lot south of the library. To get there, turn on Central Park Library, off of Golden West.
It’d be an honor for many people to show up and pay their respects. Time will be given for anyone who wishes to share memories, poems, etc. Please bring your own candles, and candle holders if you have them! Just a helpful tip: you can cut the bottom out of a plastic or Styrofoam cup, stick the candle through the hole, and use it as a candle holder!! We will have a few extras if needed. :)
It comes with great sadness that I have to put this kind of news on here. Our very own Jimmy Owen Sullivan has passed away Monday in his own home in Orange County, California. I am terribly shocked and have absolutely no words. Please head over to the official Avenged Sevenfold website for the official announcement from the band.
Rest in peace, Jimmy. We miss you already.
