Metal fans, rockers embrace Avenged Sevenfold

Can metal fans and "regular" rock fans co-exist?

That's a gamble that seems to be paying off for metal Avenged Sevenfold, sharing headlining duties on a tour with Buckcherry, perhaps a more rock-radio-friendly act.

That results in what Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan described as an unexpected mix -- fans geeked about one of the acts and maybe tentatively into the other, but a larger crowd, regardless.

"This is an interesting lineup. There's a lot of straight-up rock fans mixed with a lot of metal fans, so it's an interesting mix," said Sullivan, reached before a show in Milwaukee. "Our fans all over are pretty diehard about us. I think we have one of the best fan bases in the world. That's mainly what I've noticed."

Album recalls '80s

Avenged Sevenfold has been touring relentlessly to promote its self-titled fourth album, a stylistically ambitious collection of sprawling metal songs that recall the 1980s heyday of Iron Maiden and early Metallica.

The band -- also consisting of singer M. Shadows, guitarists Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates, and bass player Johnny Christ -- also just released a live DVD and collection of B-sides from the "Avenged Sevenfold" recording sessions.

On the 10 songs that made the album, there are nods to country and Queen-style pomp that prompted the usual cries of "sellout!" upon its initial release. (The band jumped to the majors on 2005's gold-selling "City of Evil.") But Sullivan said he's seen the new record grow on fans during the past year.

"The first couple of months when you release an album, the crowds don't know the songs quite as well, so the shows get better after a few months," he said.

On the road again

A solid year on the road can run a band ragged, but Avenged Sevenfold is known for its vigorous dedication to touring (and, according to reputation, partying).

After another six weeks or so with Buckcherry, Avenged Sevenfold, A7X in shorthand, will do some more touring on its own. Sullivan said once the band has hit each city twice behind a given album, enough is enough.

"Luckily, there's enough cities in the world where we get to do it for extensive amounts of time. We love being on the road. I get really bored if I'm home for too long or in one spot for too long," he said. "Touring is more fun, but the act of creating music that people love is also very satisfying."

That said, the band has given some, but not too much, thought to how to properly follow up a project as ambitious as "Avenged Sevenfold."

"We've thought about doing a concept album," Sullivan said. "We've thought about shredding a little more, getting back to faster stuff. It's just going to come down to whatever we feel like writing at the time."

Source

Rapid City show being reschuled!

“The Buckcherry, Avenged Sevenfold, Saving Abel and Shinedown concert set for Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center was canceled by last week’s blizzard.

The promoter, Jade Nielsen, president of Jade Presents in Fargo, said the bands may play in Rapid City early next year. Nielsen said they’re trying to get it scheduled during the next leg of the tour.

“We’re hoping for early 2009 but we’re in discussions,” he said. “We should know in the next week or two.”

Buckcherry was unable to reach Rapid City after playing a concert in Billings, Mont. The concert was postponed Thursday when the band was stranded in Gillette, Wyo.

“It was an unfortunate situation but nothing could be done,” Nielsen said. “There was no possible way for them to get to Rapid City with the highways closed.”

Nielsen is asking people who have tickets to hold onto them until a future date is determined. Once it’s sorted out, Nielsen said, people can either get refunds or use the tickets for the next show. Civic Center staffers said the decision was out of their hands.”

Source

Interview with Johnny Christ

I’m not sure Johnny Christ was “all there” during the interview I conducted with him on Tuesday. The bassist for Avenged Sevenfold, Christ, whose real name Johnny Seward, seemed like he was caught off-guard when he was put on the phone. Initially, a representative for Warner Brothers, their label, couldn’t find him. I was on hold for the duration of the 10-minute search mission. After the mess was cleared up, the Herald conducted a rather condensed Q&A with the musician.

While Seward was nice enough to make time for an interview, his answers regarding the current tour with Buckcherry and Shinedown were, to put it nicely, safe.

“The tour’s been great. The package has been great for the fans, and everyone’s excited so it’s doing really well. Touring with Buckcherry and Shinedown is really amazing. They’re a couple (of) really cool bands, and we get to make new friends. It’s a really fun tour to be out on,” he said.

That said, he seemed more honest when I asked if touring with modern rock bands (and their respective fan bases) forces them to change their set.

“That’s kinda one of the things that we wanted to do was get out and tour in front of these different crowds and show them what we do,” Seward said. “At the same token, we don’t change our set to adhere [to different audiences].”

The band’s musical tastes on the tour bus aren’t that surprising, considering Avenged Sevenfold’s music.

“Matt [Sanders, lead singer] has been listening to Operation: Mindcrime [by Queensr˙che]. It’s been a little weird ‘cause I’ve been listening to Metallica again and their new album. It reminds me of how much I like Metallica,” Seward said.

The most honest response (read: no notes from the label) from Seward comes with a question about illegal downloading.

“It’s gonna be done either way. As a band, we really can’t do anything about it,” he said. “We’re just happy that fans get the music somehow and come out to the shows. Whether we like it or not, it’s gonna happen. So we have to embrace it. There’s still a lot of fans out there that come to our shows, and that is what’s really important.”

The band in recent years has become increasingly political with songs like “M.I.A.” and “Critical Acclaim.”

“When the political stuff comes up we’re not choosing a side, right or wrong, or anything like that. But there is shit going on, and we want people to make their own decisions about it,” Seward said. “At some point, people have to take responsibility for themselves. It’s not really about right-left, whatever the fuck you feel. There is shit going on and someone has to do something about it. So we’re not very political in that sense.”

Seward also shed insight about the experimental songs on their most recent album, Avenged Sevenfold, like “Brompton Cocktail” and “A Little Piece of Heaven.”

“As with every album and every song we write, we approach it differently every time,” he said. “We always write a bunch of different stuff, and if we like what comes out of it, we’ll put it on the record. We’re a very diverse band, and we can jump to different places. That’s one thing that we pride ourselves on. We want to evolve as a band. Each album is different, and we don’t wanna keep making the same songs. We never will.”

Seward spoke about the potential for a new record as well.

“We have a lot of ideas. We write a little bit here and there. We won’t bring it all together until we’ve finished this touring cycle,” he said. “Probably around spring we’ll get home and start writing material.”

So what exactly should fans in Madison expect from the band’s show?

“You shouldn’t be expecting anything, actually,” Seward said. “We kinda like to keep it loose. We have a good time out on stage and put on a really great show. Pretty much, expect anything. It’s gonna be an Avenged Sevenfold show with some production and good music.”

Source
